Modern Reliquary
The assignment was to make a piece of art that turned something medieval into something modern. I chose to make a modern reliquary that mocks how people follow pop culture like it’s a religion. This whole idea is represented by the royal wedding. The bottom part of the reliquary is a sculpture of Kate’s wedding dress and the top is a sculpture of her hand with the royal engagement ring. Medieval reliquaries used to house various holy items such as thorns from the crown of thorns, so in the back of the sculpture I enclosed small pieces of fabric to make it look as though they had been clipped from William and Kate’s wedding attire.
